Sign installation revolutionised
One of the highlights of Sign & Digital UK was the launch of a remarkable new method for installing signs.
Known as GroundPlug, it is a patented steel foundation and anchor system based on a proven Scandinavian design and seems destined to become a more reliable and cost-effective alternative to conventional concrete-based sign foundations.
The system is particularly suitable for the installation of tall totem signs, flagpoles, lighting columns, advertising hoardings and street furniture.

With this new solution, there are no labour-intensive and disruptive earthmoving and digging activities, no concrete, no backfill or spoil management and only minimal, or frequently zero, re-surfacing requirements. It is necessary only to scan the ground, make a pilot hole, drive in the GroundPlug to the required depth, and activate the anchor blades by simply tightening the securing bolt before installing the sign. At the end of use, it is easy to recover the anchor with much less environmental impact. In trials using a typical five metre-high pylon sign, the use of GroundPlug resulted in a 50 percent saving on installation time and overall cost savings in excess of one third, when compared with the traditional concrete cage method.
There are four GroundPlug models to accommodate different stabilising and securing requirements, with the SK 30TV being the most appropriate for sign installation. In a recent project at Canary Wharf in London involving the installation of a 13.5 metres- high sign weighing 10 metric tonnes, use of the GroundPlug anchor system enabled the sign installation team to go 1.7 metres deeper than would have been possible using conventional concrete-based methods, with no spoil management and full compliance with all technical, life cycle and safety requirements.
